Artist Statement
I became aware of my own mortality at a very young age. My first memories are of my mother crying in the hospital as she practiced giving shots to an orange. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1975. In the first years of my treatment, there were no home blood sugar tests, insulin was purified from pig pancreases and treatment was difficult. My mom recalled a hypoglycemic episode when I was young where I looked up at her and asked if I was going to die.
My artwork revolves around sharing the trials and tribulations of living with type 1 diabetes. The challenge of this kind of artwork is to make the subject approachable. I use photography, printmaking and other media to describe the scale and impact of an invisible illness and its many ways of impacting my existence.
